Biography of the Artist
Zhang Guanghai was born in 1947 in Chengdu, Sichuan. He now teaches Chinese painting in the Department of Art at Sichuan Teachers University. Unlike the work of other traditionalist Chinese artists, paintings by Professor Zhang can best be described as contemporary Chinese art that comments on the life of the modern artist. He redefines the Chinese art tradition via ink, line, and color, and by constructing a series of paintings that reflect his views of self and society. Quiet and dignified, his contemporary Chinese paintings are vibrant in color, nostalgic in composition, and critical in theme. Prof. Zhang is a contemporary artist with a traditional heart.
As a distinguished artist in China, Zhang Guanghai and his paintings have been well received in Chengdu, Beijing, and Taiwan. Selected Exhibitions and Awards 2005 -- Spring Dream won the award for one of the best paintings exhibited in the Annual Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibition held in Beijing. This painting was collected by a private Chinese art collector in Taiwan.
2003 -- Forever received the award for best painting of the year in "The Annual Exhibition of Famous Contemporary Chinese Artists” held in Beijing. This painting is currently housed at the National Gallery of Art, Beijing.
1996 -- A landscape painting was selected to appear in "The Exhibition of Trans-century Contemporary Poetry, Calligraphy, Painting and Seals" held in honor of the Forty-Seventh Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China, Beijing, and is now in the exhibition's permanent collection.
1995 -- My Home is Yellow was shown in the "Exhibition of Modern and Contemporary Art" held in Chengdu, and is now in the exhibition's permanent collection.
1987 -- held one-person art exhibition at Provincial Museum of Sichuan in Chengdu, sponsored by the Association of Contemporary Chinese Artists.
1985 and earlier -- Zhang Guanghai was recognized as one of the most promising young artists in Sichuan. His paintings won many regional awards and honors in Sichuan.
