Biography of the Artist
Deng Kecheng was born in 1959 in Chengdu, Sichuan. He is currently a professor of Chinese painting at Sichuan University of Calligraphy and Painting. Recognized as the Number One Painter of Bamboo in Sichuan, Deng is dedicated to traditional Chinese painting motifs. His favorite subject matter is Bamboo, Plum, Lotus and Orchid, all of which stand for well known personal qualities. In the Chinese cultural tradition, bamboo personifies the sage with extraordinary qualities; plum signifies a dignified person and the dawn of spring or hope; the purity of the lotus is associated with the divine; the orchid signifies a gentlemanly person, the noble, and the beautiful. His flower paintings define each motif in the manner of traditional Chinese painters, such as the structure of Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322), the elegance of Zou Fulei (14th c.), the composition of Li Shan (1688-1757) and the subtle shading of Zhao Zhiqian (nineteenth century). The Chinese symbolic paintings of Deng Kecheng are modest in size, and their divine colors and lofty symbolism make them excellent examples of decorative arts. His plum, lotus, and orchid paintings have been widely exhibited in Sichuan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Japan.
