Zhang Guanghai (1947-) teaches Chinese painting in the Department of Art at Sichuan Teachers University. Unlike the work of other traditionalist Chinese artists, paintings by Zhang can best be described as contemporary Chinese art that comments on the life of a modern artist. He redefines the Chinese art tradition via ink, line, and color, and by constructing a series of paintings that reflect his views of self and society. Quiet and dignified, his paintings are vibrant in color, nostalgic in composition, and critical in theme. Zhang is a contemporary artist with a traditional heart. As a distinguished artist in China, Zhang Guanghai and his paintings have been well received in Chengdu, Beijing, and Taiwan. His signature paintings offered in our Current Offerings under Contemporary Chinese Art reflect his concern with maintaining Chinese painting traditions. Paintings by Zhang are priced modestly because he does not want cost to prevent anyone from appreciating authentic, traditional Chinese art.
