Biography of the Artist
Wang Su (1794-1877) , also known as "Xiaomei" (Little Plum) and "Xiaomu" (Little Nobody), was a distinguished artist of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). His skillful portrayal of human figures animals, fish and insects are well-known to collectors of Chinese art. The painting of "Happy Fisherman" in our Current Offerings, a copy of one of Wang's most famous paintings is like the original in the way it offers a fresh, soothing configuration of characters in a natural but refined context. Quiet and relaxed, the happy fisherman in Wang Su's painting reflects the artist's vision of the refined life of a Chinese Literatus. Wang's work is available at Current Offerings under Classical Chinese Paintings.
