Biography of Wang Yun

Wang Yun (1652-1735) was a well-known landscape painter of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). He was a native of Gaoyou, Jiangsu province. Specializing in landscape, architecture, figure and flower and bird genres, Wang Yun's paintings are characterized by a delicate articulation of the subject matter, a sensitive use of ink and color and his mastery of classical landscape painting techniques. His passionate devotion to classical Chinese painting aesthetics and traditions is expressed in his fine works. In terms of subject matter and style, Wang Yun's painting shares many common features with works by Chou Ying (1509-1551) of the Ming dynasty (1368-1664), one of the leading artists of the time.

Wang Yun's Autumn Outing offered in our Chinese Painting Gallery under Classical Chinese Paintings might be a fine work attributed to Wang Yun. Although the painting bears the signature of Wang Yun, his official name seal, and many signs of an aged painting, a stylistic analysis of the painting seems to suggest that it might be a painting painted by a later hand , perhaps an artist of the 19th century, in the style of Wang Yun. In other words, the authenticity of the painting is not certain, but in any event, it is a fine antique landscape painting.
